Gossypium Herbaceum cotton, or commonly called Levant Cotton, is a species of cotton native to the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa and Arabia where it still grows in the wild as a perennial shrub. It likes a long, hot growing season to produce the best cotton fibers, so it performs well in the southern United States. However, Levant Cotton plants can be grown with success in cooler areas if grown in a container and moved indoors. It makes for a showy garden plant, and it is fun to watch through all its stages!Interesting fact:Cotton is not a flower, in fact, it is more akin to a dandelion. After about 100 days, cotton bolls begin to fill and open up where the flowers once were. Each boll contains about 32 immature seeds from which cotton fibers will begin to grow.
